BookBook — Account & Data Deletion

This page explains how to delete your BookBook Account and the data associated with it, exactly what gets deleted, what we may keep and for how long, and how long the process takes. BookBook (the "App" or "Service") is an independently developed app and website ("we", "us", "our"). You can delete your whole Account, or you can delete individual pieces of your Content without closing your Account. Both options are described below.

Delete your account in the app

You can delete your Account from inside BookBook, on any platform, without contacting us:

  1. Open Profile (or Settings).
  2. Tap Delete account.
  3. Confirm when prompted. For your security we may ask you to re-enter your password, re-authenticate with Google, or enter a one-time code sent to your email before we proceed.

Once you confirm, deletion begins. This closes your Account and removes your Personal Data and Content as described under What gets deleted. It cannot be undone.

Request deletion from the web (no app needed)

If you can't use the app — for example you've uninstalled it, changed devices, or signed up with an email you no longer use — you can still request deletion without reinstalling or logging in.

We may need to verify that you own the Account before we act — usually by confirming you control the Account's email address — so that we don't delete the wrong person's data. Once verified, we process the request on the timeline described under How long deletion takes.

This web request applies to the "BookBook" app published by BookBook.

What gets deleted

When your Account is deleted, we remove the data tied to it, including:

Transient shelf-scan photos are never part of this because they are never stored: text recognition (OCR) runs on your device, and the raw scan frames are discarded after the spine text is read. They are not uploaded to us or to any third party.

Deleting individual content (without closing your account)

You don't have to delete your whole Account to remove specific items. Within the app you can delete individual books, shelves, reviews, notes, ratings, cover/spine images, friend connections, and lending records, and you can change or remove your avatar and profile details. Deleting an individual item removes it from your Account on the same backend timeline as above; it does not affect the rest of your data.

What we may retain, and why

After deletion we may keep limited data where we have a legal basis or operational need to do so:

Where we keep anything, we limit it to what's necessary and delete it once the reason for keeping it has passed.

How long deletion takes

Deletion from our active systems begins as soon as you confirm in the app or once we verify a web request, and normally completes within 30 days. Residual copies in backups are removed on the backup cycle described above. We'll act on verified web requests within 30 days and let you know when it's done.

If you signed in with Google

Deleting your BookBook Account removes the link between BookBook and your Google Account and the sign-in tokens we hold. Deleting your BookBook Account does not delete your Google Account. You can also review or revoke BookBook's access at any time from your Google Account under Security → Your connections to third-party apps & services (or Third-party apps with account access). Revoking access there does not by itself delete your BookBook Account — use one of the deletion paths above for that.
